Design Wall

A vertical batting- or flannel-covered wall surface where quilt blocks stick without pins, allowing layout planning.

A design wall is a flat vertical surface covered with batting, flannel, or foam board that allows cut fabric pieces and quilt blocks to adhere without pins through the natural grip of woven fabric. Working vertically (rather than laying blocks on the floor) lets the quilter see the design from a distance, rotate blocks, and evaluate color placement and balance before committing to sewing. Even a small design wall — a piece of batting pinned to the wall — dramatically improves design decision-making. Most serious quilters consider a design wall indispensable.

Practice makes perfect.

NiftyFifty connects quilters from all 50 states through block swaps, bees, and quilt-alongs. Great place to put new techniques to work.
