What Is a Fat Quarter?

A fat quarter is a quarter-yard of fabric cut differently from a standard quarter-yard. A standard quarter-yard is cut straight across the fabric bolt — 9″ × 44″. A fat quarter is cut by folding a half-yard in half along the crosswise grain, yielding 18″ × 22″ — a wider, more useful shape for quilting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many fat quarters for a queen quilt?

A queen quilt (90×108") typically uses 36–50 fat quarters for a scrappy look, with 44 fat quarters being the most common recommendation. A 2-color queen quilt needs about 18 fat quarters per color.

How many fat quarters in a yard of fabric?

There are 4 fat quarters in 1 yard of fabric. A fat quarter is an 18"×22" cut (a half-yard folded and cut in half along the crosswise grain). Four fat quarters sewn together equal approximately 1 yard of 44"-wide fabric.

Can I make a quilt from just fat quarters?

Yes. Fat quarters are the most popular precut for quilts. A scrappy quilt made entirely from fat quarters is easy to plan: 12 fat quarters for a baby quilt, 24 for a throw, 44+ for a queen. You will still need yardage for the backing and binding, which are typically cut from 44"-wide fabric by the yard.

How many fat quarters in a bundle?

Fat quarter bundles vary by manufacturer. Most come in collections of 10, 16, 20, or 42 fat quarters. A full line from many fabric designers includes 40–42 fat quarters (one per print in the collection).
