Standard Quilt Sizes Chart

Every standard quilt size from wall hanging to king — dimensions in inches and centimeters, bed fit, drop math, pillow tuck, batting and backing requirements, and UK / Australian conversions.

Quilt sizes are surprisingly standardized — once you know the conventions, the same dimensions appear in pattern books from the 1950s through today. This page is the master reference. Use it to pick the right size for your project, or click any size below for a deep dive on dimensions, bed fit, and fabric requirements.

How to Calculate Quilt Size from a Mattress

If you know your mattress dimensions, you can calculate the exact quilt size you need. The formula:

Quilt width = mattress width + (2 × side drop)
Quilt length = mattress length + foot drop + pillow tuck

Side drop

How far the quilt hangs over each side of the mattress. Standard is 10–16 inches. For a floor-length quilt, add the mattress + box spring height (typically 18–25 inches total).

Foot drop

How far the quilt hangs over the foot of the bed. Standard is 15–28 inches — always longer than side drop because feet protrude from the mattress.

Pillow tuck

Extra length to tuck under and fold over the pillows. Usually 10–12 inches. Coverlets sitting on top of pillows don't need a tuck.

Mattress thickness

Modern pillow-top mattresses are 14–18 inches thick. If your bed is taller than 12 inches, add 4–6 inches to each side drop to compensate.

International Quilt Sizes (UK, Australia, NZ)

US, UK, and Australian quilt conventions differ — mattress sizes vary, and so do drop conventions. A US queen quilt won't fit a UK super king the same way it fits a US queen.

Australia (cm)100×130150×180140×210*180×210210×210245×210

* UK and AU 'single' = a different mattress size than US 'twin' (90×190 cm UK vs 39×75″ US).
** UK doesn't have a 'queen' — UK 'kingsize' (150×200 cm mattress) sits between US queen and US king.

Fabric Requirements by Quilt Size

Rough fabric estimates for each standard quilt size. Top yardage varies by pattern complexity — use the yardage calculator for exact numbers.

Backing yardage assumes pieced backing from 44″ WOF fabric. Use a 108″ wide-back fabric to reduce backing yardage by half (and skip the seam) on twin and larger quilts.

How Many Blocks for Each Quilt Size

Block counts for common finished block sizes. “With sashing” assumes 2″ sashing and 3″ border.

Which Quilt Size Do I Need?

How Much Overhang Does a Quilt Need?

Lap & Throw Quilts

No overhang needed. Throw quilts are designed to wrap around one person on a sofa. Standard size 60×72" is enough for most adults; bump to 60×80" if you're tall.

Children's Bed Quilts

Plan for 10–12" of drop on each side and at the foot. For a twin bed (39×75"), a 66×88" quilt gives approximately 13" of drop on the sides. For bunk beds, skip the foot drop entirely so the quilt doesn't dangle into the lower bunk.

Adult Bed Quilts

For full coverage, plan for 10–15" on each side and 15–28" at the foot. Add 10–12" to the length if you want the quilt to tuck under the pillows. The foot drop should always be longer than the side drop.

Floor-Length Drop

To reach the floor, add mattress height (10–14") plus box spring height (8–9") to the drop on each side — typically 20–25" of additional width needed on each side. Modern pillow-top kings can require 30" of additional width.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common quilt size?+

The 60×72" throw quilt (also called a lap quilt) is the most-made size in modern quilting. It's not sized to a bed, finishes quickly, uses about 4 yards of fabric, and works as a gift for anyone. The most-searched quilt size on Google is queen (90×108"), because queen is the most common US adult bed size.

What size is a throw quilt?+

A standard throw quilt measures 60 inches wide by 72 inches long (60×72"). Some patterns and tutorials use 50×65" for a smaller 'lap' variation or 60×80" for taller adults. Throw quilts are designed for sofa use and are not sized for a specific mattress.

What size quilt fits a queen bed?+

A queen quilt should measure at least 90 inches wide by 108 inches long (90×108") to cover a queen mattress (60×80") with a 15-inch drop on each side and about 28 inches at the foot. For a pillow tuck, add 10 more inches to the length.

What size quilt covers a king bed?+

A king quilt should measure 108 inches wide by 108 inches long (108×108") to cover an Eastern king mattress (76×80") with about 16 inches of drop on each side and 28 inches at the foot. California king beds use a different size: 104×114" (narrower and longer).

What is the difference between a throw and a lap quilt?+

In casual modern use, the terms are interchangeable — both describe a quilt sized for one adult, between 50×65" and 60×80". When patterns distinguish them, 'lap quilt' is the smaller variant (around 50×65", sized for a seated adult) and 'throw' is the larger one (60×72", sized for an adult lying on a sofa).

How big should a baby quilt be?+

A standard baby / crib quilt measures 40 inches wide by 52 inches long (40×52"). This fits a standard crib mattress (28×52") with a few inches of overlap. Baby quilts used as play mats or stroller blankets can be smaller — 36×36" is a common play mat size; 30×36" is a common stroller-blanket size.

How much overhang should a quilt have?+

For a bed quilt, plan for 10–15 inches of drop on each side and 15–28 inches at the foot. If you want the quilt to reach the floor (floor-length drop), add the mattress height (typically 10–14") plus the box spring height (8–9") to each side. For pillow coverage, add 10–12 inches to the quilt length.

What is a pillow tuck?+

A pillow tuck is the extra length added to a quilt so that the top edge can be tucked under your pillows and folded back over them. Most modern quilt patterns include 10–12 inches of length for a pillow tuck on twin, full, queen, and king sizes. Coverlets and bedspreads designed to sit ON TOP of pillows do not need a pillow tuck.

What size batting do I need for each quilt size?+

Buy batting at least 4 inches larger on every side than your finished quilt. That means baby 48×60", lap 58×73", throw 68×80", twin 72×96", full 88×104", queen 98×116", king 116×116". Pre-cut batting sometimes runs short of these dimensions — buy by the yard or size up to avoid problems.

Is a quilt the same size in the UK and US?+

No. US 'twin', 'full', 'queen', and 'king' are different from UK 'single', 'double', 'kingsize', and 'super king' both in mattress dimensions and quilt overhang conventions. UK quilts are generally less wide because UK conventions use less drop on the sides. See the international quilt sizes table below for direct comparisons.

How many blocks do I need for each quilt size?+

It depends on block size. For 12-inch finished blocks: baby 9, throw 20, twin 24, full 35, queen 56, king 64. For 6-inch blocks the count quadruples. The full block-count table is on this page, or use our block calculator to enter any combination of quilt size, block size, sashing, and border.

How big is a king size quilt in cm?+

A standard 108×108" king quilt is approximately 274×274 cm. A California king (104×114") is approximately 264×290 cm. Note that these dimensions don't match UK 'super king' (typically 260×220 cm) — the UK super king is narrower because its mattress is 180 cm wide vs the US king's 193 cm.
