Stiletto

A pointed tool used to guide and control fabric near the needle and to open seam intersections.

A quilting stiletto is a pointed metal or wooden tool — like a thick sewing needle with a handle — used to guide fabric under the presser foot without putting fingers near the needle, to hold layered pieces flat while sewing, and to open pressed seam intersections. It's also used to 'stab' seam allowances flat when pressing complex intersections. Some stilettos double as seam rippers. It is one of the most reach-for tools at the sewing machine.
