Every calculation a quilter needs — binding, backing, batting, HSTs, flying geese, yardage, fat quarters, sashing, and precuts.
It depends on the quilt size and pattern complexity. As a rule of thumb: a throw needs about 4–5 yards for the top, a queen about 8–9 yards, and a king about 10–12 yards — plus backing, batting, and roughly ¾ to 1 yard for binding. The yardage calculator gives per-size estimates for top, backing, and binding together.
Add up the quilt's perimeter (2 × width + 2 × height), add about 10 inches for corners and joining, then divide by 40 (the usable width of a strip cut from standard fabric) to get the number of strips. Multiply strips by your binding width (usually 2½ inches) to get the fabric needed. The binding calculator does this for every standard size.
Backing should be 6–8 inches larger than the quilt top in both directions (3–4 inches of overhang per side) if it will be longarm quilted, or 4 inches larger for quilting on a domestic machine. For quilts wider than about 38 inches you'll need to piece standard 44-inch fabric or use 108-inch wide-back fabric.
