Community Guidelines

NiftyFifty is built on trust, generosity, and a shared love of the craft. These guidelines help us keep it that way for everyone.

Kindness First

Quilting is a tradition of generosity — people sharing time, skill, and fabric with strangers. Bring that spirit to every interaction here.

  • Be encouraging to beginners. Everyone started somewhere.
  • Disagree respectfully. Critique the work, never the person.
  • Celebrate others’ projects as generously as you’d want yours celebrated.
  • If a conversation turns unkind, step away rather than escalate.
  • Welcome members from all backgrounds, skill levels, and quilting traditions.

Harassment, bullying, or targeted unkindness of any kind is grounds for immediate account suspension.

Block & Pattern Uploads

When you upload a block photo or pattern to NiftyFifty, you keep full copyright. We ask for permission to display and archive your work within the platform — not to resell it or license it elsewhere.

  • Only upload content you own or have explicit permission to share. This includes block photos you took and patterns you designed.
  • Do not upload purchased patterns you don’t have redistribution rights to — scanned book pages, PDFs marked “not for redistribution,” etc.
  • Traditional blocks in the public domain are welcome. When in doubt about a designer’s work, link to where it can be purchased instead.
  • Block photos contributed to an exchange become part of the NiftyFifty archive — a living record of quilting history. You can remove your photos at any time.

Pattern Copyright

Pattern designers deserve credit and compensation for their work. NiftyFifty takes intellectual property seriously — and we expect our community to do the same.

  • Share freely: your own original designs, traditional blocks in the public domain, and patterns explicitly released under Creative Commons or similar open licenses.
  • Don’t share: scanned or photographed pages from purchased pattern books, PDFs you bought but don’t have rights to distribute, or anything marked “not for redistribution.”
  • Always credit the designer when you know who created a block.

Repeat copyright infringers will be removed from the platform. To report infringing content, email hello@niftyfiftyquilting.com.

Exchange Commitments

Block exchanges only work when everyone holds up their end. The NiftyFifty tradition was built on quilters who showed up — even when life got complicated.

  • Follow the theme. Read the rules carefully before you start cutting. A block that doesn’t match the theme is disappointing for your recipient.
  • Ship on time. Deadlines exist so everyone gets their blocks together. If you’re running late, tell the organizer early — not the day after the deadline.
  • Quality matters. Use good fabric, press carefully, and sew accurate seams. Your block is going into someone’s quilt for life.
  • Communicate. If life happens and you genuinely can’t participate, reach out to the organizer as soon as you know. Silence is the worst option.

Members who repeatedly fail to fulfill exchange commitments may be removed from future exchanges.

Chatrooms & Messaging

Chatrooms and direct messages are real-time spaces for quilters to connect. Keep them welcoming and on-topic.

  • Keep conversations constructive and quilt-related where possible.
  • Don’t spam channels with the same message or links repeatedly.
  • No unsolicited direct messages promoting products or services.
  • Treat private messages as private — don’t screenshot and share someone’s DMs without their permission.

Self-Promotion & Selling

NiftyFifty is a community first. Self-promotion is welcome in moderation — the key is that it adds value rather than extracting from it.

  • You may share links to your shop or patterns in your profile and in relevant discussions — but don’t repeat the same link across unrelated posts.
  • Guild feeds and exchange discussions are not advertising channels.
  • Pyramid schemes, multi-level marketing, and unsolicited DMs promoting products are prohibited.
  • Paid sponsorships or affiliate content must be clearly disclosed as such.

Reporting Problems

If you encounter content or behavior that violates these guidelines, email hello@niftyfiftyquilting.com with a description and a link to the content where possible. We review all reports and respond within 2 business days.
