King is the largest standard quilt size and the biggest commitment in time, fabric, and money. At 108×108" the king quilt covers a 76×80" Eastern king mattress with 16 inches of drop on each side, 28 inches at the foot, and a 12-inch pillow tuck. Expect 15–25 yards of fabric total and 60–120 hours of sewing for a king-size project.

King mattresses (76×80") and California king mattresses (72×84") were introduced to the US market in the early 1960s as 'luxury' bed sizes. Quilt patterns took until the 1990s to standardize king dimensions — earlier pattern books often listed 'king' as 100×96", which doesn't reach the floor on a modern pillow-top king mattress. Today's 108×108" standard accounts for thicker mattresses.
