Frequently Asked Questions

What size batting do I need for a queen quilt?

For a queen quilt top measuring 90×108", you need batting that is at least 98×116" (adding 4" on all sides). Packaged queen batting (90×108") is slightly too small — buy king batting (120×120") or purchase by the yard and cut to 98×116".

How much larger should batting be than the quilt top?

Batting should be at least 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides (8" total wider and taller). This allows for shifting during the quilting process. For heavily quilted projects or longarm quilting, use 6–8" extra on each side.

What is the best batting for a beginner?

An 80/20 cotton/poly blend batting is the best choice for beginners. It is easy to work with, minimizes shrinkage, does not beard (fibers poking through), and works well for both hand and machine quilting. It is also the most widely available batting in pre-packaged sizes.

How do I calculate batting yardage if buying by the yard?

Measure the batting width needed (quilt top width + 8") and the length needed (quilt top height + 8"). If the batting roll is wider than what you need, a single length works. Divide the length needed by 36 for yards. For a queen quilt needing 98×116" of batting, buy approximately 3.5 yards from a 108"-wide roll.
