Kitting is one quilt's fabric list times a number, plus the rounding the cutting counter forces on you. Yardage rounds up to ⅛ yd per fabric, the way a cutting counter cuts. Precuts round up to whole pieces; packs assume 42 charms, 42 layer-cake squares, or 40 jelly-roll strips. "Cut from" is the yardage to cut those pieces yourself from 40″-usable width.

Multiply each fabric in one kit by the number of kits, add a cutting-waste allowance (5% is typical for straight cuts, 10% if the kit has many small pieces or directional prints), and round each fabric up to the next ⅛ yard. Then divide by the bolt length to see how many bolts to order. The calculator does all four steps.
Most quilting cottons come on 15-yard bolts. Some manufacturers and lines ship 10- or 12-yard bolts, and wide backs are usually on 15-yard bolts too. Check your distributor's listing — the calculator lets you pick 10, 12, or 15.
Packs are faster and every print is different; cutting your own is cheaper per piece and lets you control which prints go in. A charm pack has 42 five-inch squares, which is 5¼ five-inch strips across a 40-inch width — about ¾ yard. The calculator shows both numbers so you can compare the cost.
5% for simple strip and square cuts from non-directional fabric. 10% if the kit uses directional prints, fussy cuts, or triangles. 0% only if you are counting exact pieces from a known layout — see the cutting layout calculator for that.
