The most versatile precut. Cut by folding a half-yard along the crosswise grain. 4 FQs = 1 yard.
Half a fat quarter. Useful for smaller blocks and accent fabrics.
Rolled bundle of 40 strips, each 2.5"×44". Great for strip quilts, log cabins, and the Jelly Roll Race.
42 pre-cut 5" squares, one of each print in a fabric collection. Makes Irish Chain, simple patchwork, or HSTs.
42 pre-cut 10" squares. Each square can be cut into four 5" charm squares or two sets of HSTs.
Narrow 1.5" strips for detailed strip work, string quilts, and small log cabin blocks.
Wide strips for fast strip quilts and large blocks. Less common than jelly rolls.
Tiny squares for postage stamp quilts, small patchwork, and miniature quilts.

A queen quilt (90×108") needs approximately 8–9 charm packs (5" squares) depending on the pattern. Each charm pack contains 42 squares, so 8 packs give you 336 squares. With a simple patchwork layout at 5" squares, a queen quilt needs about 324 squares for the top.
A queen quilt typically needs 2–3 jelly rolls. One jelly roll contains approximately 40 strips of 2.5"×44", which is about 2.75 yards of fabric. For a queen quilt needing 9 yards of top fabric, plan on 3 jelly rolls — or 2 if the pattern uses both jelly rolls efficiently with minimal waste.
One jelly roll (40 strips) is enough fabric for a lap or throw quilt (approximately 60×72") using the Jelly Roll Race pattern, a strip quilt, or a simple rail fence quilt. For a larger quilt, you will need 2–3 rolls.
A twin quilt (66×88") needs approximately 3 layer cakes (10" squares). Each layer cake has 42 squares; 3 cakes give you 126 squares. A simple 10" block layout for a twin quilt needs about 48 blocks — so 2 layer cakes may be sufficient depending on the pattern.
