12. A fat quarter squares up to about 21 × 18 inches: four 5-inch columns across the 21-inch side and three down the 18-inch side. The leftover 1-inch and 3-inch strips are too narrow for another square.
56 — eight across by seven down from a 21 × 18 inch fat quarter. That is one more row than most charts give, because they figure the fat quarter at 20 × 17 after generous trimming. If you square up hard, plan on 49.
Because a rectangle often fits better in a mix of orientations. Once the main rows are cut there is usually a strip left along one edge that is too narrow for an upright piece but wide enough for a turned one. On a non-directional print that is free fabric. Tick 'directional' and the calculator keeps every piece upright.
Enter the cut size, seam allowance included — 2½ inches for a 2-inch finished square, 4⅞ for a 4-inch finished HST square. The calculator packs cut pieces; it does not add anything.
A fat quarter comes off the bolt as 18 × 22 inches. After you trim the selvage and square the edges you reliably have 18 × 21 inches, and that is what the calculator uses. If yours is bigger, choose Custom size and type it in.
