Mariner's Compass
An elaborate circular block with many narrow, pointed rays radiating from the center.
Mariner's Compass is one of the most complex and show-stopping traditional blocks, featuring a circular design with 8, 16, or 32 radiating points alternating in two or more fabrics. The narrow points require precise cutting and sewing to meet cleanly at the center and maintain sharp tips. Foundation paper piecing has made Mariner's Compass dramatically more accessible — each section of the compass is paper-pieced separately, then the sections are joined. The completed compass is typically appliquéd onto a background square. Historically, the pattern symbolized navigation and was popular in sailor communities.
