Churn Dash
A classic nine-patch block featuring a center square surrounded by half square triangles and rectangles.
The Churn Dash (also known as Monkey Wrench, Hole in the Barn Door, or Sherman's March) is a traditional nine-patch block with a distinctive cross-and-corner pattern. The center is a solid square; the four corner patches are half square triangles; and the four side patches are each a rectangle divided diagonally. The name refers to the wooden tool used to churn butter. Churn Dash quilts are highly scrappy-friendly because the block reads as a graphic shape even with varied fabrics in each position.
