Hexagon

A six-sided geometric shape used in all-over mosaic quilt designs, most famously in Grandmother's Flower Garden.

The hexagon is a six-sided polygon and the fundamental unit of many mosaic quilt styles. Because hexagons tessellate perfectly (they tile together without gaps), they are ideal for creating continuous all-over patterns. Most hexagon quilts are assembled using English paper piecing, though sewing machine methods exist. Beyond Grandmother's Flower Garden, hexagons appear in Honeycomb quilts (all one size in a grid), Tumbling Hexagons, and various 'English garden' designs. The popularity of hexagons has surged in recent years with the availability of precut hexie papers and acrylic templates.
