Standard quilting cotton is 42-44 inches wide off the bolt. Wide backing runs 108 inches so you can back a quilt without piecing. A yard of standard-width fabric is 36 x 42-44 inches.
As a rough guide, a throw-size top takes 4-6 yards total across all fabrics, plus about 4 yards of backing and a half yard for binding. Your pattern's fabric requirements are the reliable answer — buy an extra quarter yard of anything you'd hate to run short on.
The shop cuts your yardage from the bolt when you order, in one continuous piece. Order the total length you need at once — two separate 1-yard orders may arrive as two pieces, not one 2-yard cut.
Add it to your stash or tag it in a project so other quilters can see it in action.
