Low-volume fabrics are pale, near-white prints (like the Monochrome white-on-white line) that add gentle texture to a background without competing with your main prints.

Backgrounds often eat up more yardage than any other fabric in the quilt, so buy generously and from a reorderable solid — running short mid-quilt is a common frustration.
