The first shots of the Civil War were really those fired at the steamership "Star of the West" as she approached teh Charleston Harbor on January 9, 1861. The Confederate resistance was successful in keeping the 200 reinforcement troops of the United States Ninth Infantry from landing at Fort Sumter.
