California was admitted as the 31st state in 1850. California provided 15,725 volunteers to the Union Army. Gold from California helped finance the Union effort. California Soldiers helped keep teh land between California and the rest of the Union from anarchy, and helped keep the Confederates in Texas from spreading further west. These soldiers, serving in the west and southwest, helped secure the Pacific coast and keep the Confederates from gaining strenght there. This block depicts a bear paw for the Bear flag, the state flag, and the California Grizzly Bear the state animal.
