What is the Pattern Designer?

The NiftyFifty Pattern Designer is a free online quilt block design tool that turns your on-screen design into a real, sewable pattern. You paint traditional pieced units — squares, half-square triangles, hourglasses, flying geese, curves, log cabins — onto a grid, layer freeform appliqué shapes on top, and color everything with more than 600 real Kona Cotton and Moda Bella solids and 11,000 real quilting prints. Every design produces a per-fabric cutting chart with seam allowances included, true-size printable templates, and a step-by-step pattern PDF. It runs in your browser with nothing to install, built by NiftyFifty, the online quilting community founded in 1997.

How it works

  1. 1Pick a block size and grid. Choose a finished block size (4–18 inches) and a grid. Only ruler-friendly combinations are offered, so every cut lands on an ⅛-inch mark.
  2. 2Paint your design. Click cells to paint 12 traditional pieced units — squares, half-square triangles, hourglasses, flying geese, log cabins, curves and more. Turn on symmetry to design one corner and get the rest free.
  3. 3Choose real fabrics. Color the design with 600+ real Kona and Bella solids, 11,000+ real prints, or photos of fabric from your own stash.
  4. 4Add appliqué if you like. Stamp or draw freeform shapes on top. The tool classifies each one as fusible or needle-turn and warns about anything hard to sew.
  5. 5Print the pattern. Print the per-fabric cutting chart, true-size templates for curves and appliqué, and a step-by-step PDF pattern with a diagram of your block.

A pattern you can actually sew

Plenty of design apps make pretty pictures. This one behaves like a good pattern writer: measurements land on ⅛″ ruler marks, half-square triangles are cut two-at-a-time the way quilters actually make them, curves and hexagons come with notched true-size templates, tiny pieces earn you an honest warning before you cut, and the final sheet tells you the unfinished size so nobody ever trims their points off. Design one corner with symmetry turned on and the rest of the block follows along — most traditional blocks are symmetric, and that little trick is how the old patterns were drafted too.

What sizes of quilt block can I design?

Finished block sizes from 4 to 18 inches, on grids from 2×2 up to 20×20. The tool only offers block-and-grid combinations that produce clean ⅛-inch cutting measurements, so every design is rotary-cutter friendly.

Can I try real fabrics before I buy them?

Yes. The built-in fabric catalog includes 600+ real Kona Cotton and Moda Bella solids and 11,000+ real quilting prints, and you can upload photos of fabric from your own stash. Every fabric in your design appears in the supply list with the yardage to buy.

Does the designer handle appliqué?

Yes. The Appliqué tool lets you stamp or draw freeform shapes — hearts, stars, leaves, anything — on top of your pieced block. Each shape is automatically classified as fusible or needle-turn appliqué, warned if it would be hard to sew, and printed as a true-size template with cutting lines and a placement guide.

Can I print a full pattern for my design?

Yes. The Build tab writes a complete pattern: supply list, per-fabric cutting chart, an assembly step for every unit you used with tips matched to your skill level, and a printable PDF with a diagram of your finished block.
