Needle-Turn Appliqué
A hand appliqué method where the seam allowance is turned under using the tip of the needle as the shape is sewn.
Needle-turn appliqué is a traditional hand technique prized for producing smooth, clean curves and seamless joins. The appliqué shape is cut with a small seam allowance (about 3/16 inch). As the shape is stitched to the background, the quilter uses the tip of the appliqué needle to sweep the seam allowance under the shape just ahead of each stitch. The stitches that anchor the shape are nearly invisible on the front. Needle-turn appliqué requires patience and practice but produces the most refined results of any appliqué method.
