Batik

A hand-dyed fabric with a distinctive mottled, marbled appearance created using a wax-resist dyeing process.

Batik fabric is made using an ancient Indonesian technique where hot wax is applied to cloth in patterns, then the cloth is dyed. The wax resists the dye, creating the characteristic mottled, veined, or watercolor-like appearance. Quilt batiks are typically made in Indonesia or Malaysia for the quilting market. They read as textured solids from a distance while adding visual interest up close, making them excellent blenders and backgrounds. Batiks are available in every color family and cut and sew like standard quilting cotton.
