About this pattern

The Bat and Harvest Moon is a free foundation paper piecing (FPP) pattern from NiftyFifty: a 14-inch square block of 42 pieces sewn in 20 sections, using 5 fabrics, at a intermediate skill level. It opens in NiftyFifty's free browser-based FPP tool, which prints mirrored foundations with 1/4-inch seam allowance at 4 to 18 inches. Every seam is a straight line, so the whole block is sewn with the flip-and-sew method.

A sewing tip for this block

The bat sits entirely inside the moon, so it's black on gold everywhere. A tone-on-tone black and a mottled gold make the moon glow.

What to make with it

The bat and moon make a great Halloween wall hanging or pillow, and pair well with the jack-o'-lantern and owl blocks.

Try it in other colors

Try a silver moon on a black sky for a spookier look. Every fabric can be swapped in the FPP tool before you print.
