Custom FPP Patterns From Your Photo

Your dog, your first house, the barn down the road. A foundation paper piecing pattern drawn from your own photo turns the things you love into a block you can sew.

What is a custom FPP pattern?

A custom FPP pattern is a foundation paper piecing pattern drafted from your own photo, so a picture of your pet, home or a favorite place can be sewn as a quilt block. The designer simplifies the photo into straight-seamed sections, numbers every piece in the order it is sewn, and sends a printable PDF of foundations: paper templates you sew fabric directly onto, flipping and pressing one piece at a time. Because every color change becomes a seam, the art of a good custom pattern is deciding what to leave out. NiftyFifty has been a home for quilt blocks since 1997, and our free FPP Pattern Maker lets you draft one yourself if you'd rather.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose your photo

Pick a clear, well-lit photo with a plain background. Your dog on the porch, your grandmother's farmhouse, the lighthouse from your honeymoon.

  2. 2

    Agree on size and detail

Tell the designer the finished size you want. Bigger blocks can hold more detail; smaller ones need a simpler drawing.

  3. 3

    The designer drafts the foundations

The photo is traced into straight seams, grouped into sections that can actually be sewn, and every piece is numbered in sewing order.

  4. 4

    Review and adjust

Most designers send a preview so you can ask for changes, like a simpler background or a different ear shape, before the final PDF.

  5. 5

    Print and sew

You get a printable PDF of mirrored foundations. Print at 100%, check the test square, and sew piece 1, then 2, then 3.

What does a custom pattern cost?

It depends on how much detail you want. Independent designers set their own prices by size and piece count, so a small, simple block costs less than a large, detailed portrait. Ask each designer for a quote and how long the wait is before you pay.

Things that raise the price: more than one subject, a busy background, a very small finished size with lots of detail, or a deadline.

Choosing a photo that sews well

  • Take it straight on, at the subject's eye level, in soft daylight.
  • Fill most of the frame with the subject. Crop out the rest.
  • Choose a plain background. Every color change becomes a seam.
  • Look for clear edges between colors. Fur, foliage and fog are lovely, but hard to piece.
  • Send the original file, not a screenshot from social media.

Would you rather draft it yourself?

Our free FPP Pattern Maker runs in your browser. Upload your photo as an underlay, draw your seams over it, and match each piece to a real Kona or Bella solid. You'll print mirrored foundations with numbered pieces, lettered sections and a quarter-inch seam allowance, and every drawing can actually be sewn.

How the FPP Pattern Maker works

Questions quilters ask

What is a custom FPP pattern?

A custom FPP pattern is a foundation paper piecing pattern drafted from your own photo, so you can sew a picture of your pet, home or a favorite place as a quilt block. The designer simplifies the photo into straight-seamed sections, numbers every piece in sewing order, and sends a printable PDF of foundations you sew directly onto.

How much does a custom FPP pattern cost?

Independent designers set their own prices, based on the size of the block and how much detail it has. Expect to pay more for more pieces, more than one subject, or a rush. Ask for a quote and the turnaround before you pay.

What kind of photo works best?

A sharp, well-lit photo taken straight on, with the subject filling most of the frame and a plain background. Clear edges between colors matter more than resolution: FPP turns every color change into a seam, so a cluttered background becomes dozens of tiny pieces.

How long does a custom FPP pattern take?

It depends on the designer's queue and the level of detail. Ask for a turnaround before you pay, and allow extra time if you are sewing it as a gift with a deadline.

Can I make a custom FPP pattern myself?

Yes. NiftyFifty's free FPP Pattern Maker lets you upload a photo as an underlay, draw seams over it, and print real foundations with numbered pieces, sections and seam allowance. Every drawing is sewable by construction, so it can't produce an impossible pattern.

Is a custom FPP pattern hard to sew?

If you can sew on the line, you can paper piece. Detailed portraits have more pieces and smaller sections, so they take longer, but the method is the same flip-and-sew every time. Ask the designer for a simpler version if you're new to FPP.

Who owns a custom pattern made from my photo?

Usually the designer keeps the copyright to the pattern drawing and you get the right to sew it. If you want to sell quilts made from it or share the pattern, agree on that with the designer before they start.
