Quilt Sizes
Standard twin quilt dimensions: 66″ wide × 88″ long (168×224 cm, or 5.50×7.33 ft).
Twin quilts are the most-purchased bedding size in the United States — children's bedrooms, guest rooms, dorm rooms, daybeds, and bunk beds all use twin mattresses. At 66×88" the quilt covers a 39×75" twin mattress with about 13 inches of drop on each side. For college dorms, scale up to a Twin XL (66×96") to fit the 80-inch-long extra-long twin mattress.
Not every twin quilt is the same size. These are the common variations published in modern quilt pattern books:
| Variation | Width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Twin (standard) | 66″ | 88″ |
| Twin XL | 66″ | 96″ |
| Generous twin | 72″ | 90″ |
The twin bed became standard in American homes between 1920 and 1940 when public-health authorities promoted separate sleeping arrangements as 'more hygienic.' Quilt patterns expanded to include twin sizing during this period, and the 68×88" 'youth bed quilt' became a staple in 1940s pattern books. The modern 66×88" finished size is the contemporary descendant.
~168 × 224 cm
66×88" converts to ~168×224 cm. UK single-bed quilts are typically 135×200 cm — noticeably smaller, because UK single mattresses are 90×190 cm.
~168 × 224 cm
Australian 'single' quilts are typically 140×210 cm — smaller than US twin because Australian single mattresses are narrower (92×188 cm).

A standard twin quilt measures 66 inches wide by 88 inches long (66×88"). This fits a twin mattress (39×75") with about 13 inches of drop on each side and 13 inches at the foot. For dorm-room Twin XL mattresses (39×80"), use 66×96".
A Twin XL quilt is 66 inches wide by 96 inches long (66×96"). The width matches a standard twin quilt, but the length is increased by 8 inches to cover the extra-long mattress used in college dorms and some adjustable beds. The mattress itself is 39×80".
A 66×88" twin quilt converts to approximately 168×224 cm. Note: UK and Australian 'single' bed quilts are smaller (135×200 cm and 140×210 cm respectively) because their single mattresses are smaller than US twin mattresses.
Yes — daybeds use a twin mattress, and a 66×88" twin quilt fits. If the daybed has a back rail (most do), consider sizing down the width to 60" so the quilt doesn't bunch against the rail.
In the US, twin and single are the same mattress size — 39×75". In the UK and Australia, 'single' refers to a slightly different size (90×190 cm in the UK; 92×188 cm in Australia), so a US twin quilt may be too large for an international single bed.
