Selvage
The tightly woven, finished edge running the length of a bolt of fabric.
The selvage is the finished edge on both long sides of a bolt of fabric, created during the weaving process to prevent fraying. Selvages are typically tighter and slightly different in texture than the rest of the fabric and are always removed before cutting quilting pieces. Many quilters save selvages for use in selvage quilts — a growing trend of incorporating the printed text, color dots, and decorative selvage edges as design elements. Print registration dots on the selvage indicate the colors used in the fabric's printing process.
