Print Scale

Print scale describes how large the individual design elements are in a printed fabric. Large-scale prints have motifs that are several inches across; small-scale prints have motifs under an inch. Medium-scale prints fall in between. When cutting small blocks, large-scale prints are problematic because each patch looks different and the design may not read as intended. Mixing print scales is a key design principle — small, medium, and large prints together create visual richness and prevent a flat, monotonous appearance.
