Partial Seam

A seam that is sewn only partway, then completed after other pieces are added.

A partial seam (also called a partial seam construction) is used when blocks or components are added in a wrap-around sequence. The first seam is sewn only halfway, the subsequent pieces are added in order around the center, and the original partial seam is completed last. Log Cabin blocks are the most familiar use of partial seams — the first log is attached with a partial seam so that the last log can wrap around seamlessly. Partial seams are also used in some medallion quilt constructions and when attaching frames around a central block.
